Americans Standing United for Broadcast Decency!

About the Petition:

For nearly two years, Grassfire has been aggressively pursuing avenues that would help bring decency and accountability back to the airwaves. Now with reports that 70% of teen programming contains sexual content (more than double what it was in 1998), and growing evidence that teens are more sexually active, and are acting out much of what they see on television, Grassfire is urging leaders in Congress to pass stringent and enforceable regulations that protect family viewing times.

Additionally, Grassfire has drafted and introduced a Ratings System Proposal that would help to restore the fractured trust between broadcaster and viewer, by eliminating sexy scenes and adult themed advertisements from playing out in front of your children. The Petition States:

As a concerned citizen and television viewer, I am calling on the FCC and our leaders in Congress to adopt strict and enforceable regulations that restore decency to network television—especially during the family-viewing hours!

The recent rash of trash on television and subsequent public outcry should serve as a wake-up call to our leadership that the vast majority of Americans want decency restored to the airwaves. I am calling on elected leadership to draft and support legislation that brings responsibility and accountability back to the airwaves, as well as legislation like the Family Entertainment and Copyright Act of 2005 (S. 167, HR 357) that affirms the right of citizens to purchase and use in the privacy of their homes technology that allows them to skip over or mute objectionable content in legally purchased or rented DVD movies.
