I want to quickly frame for you what is happening in the Alito
confirmation battle -- who is behind the attacks and what
Grassfire is doing right now.
+ + Lifting the veil on Alito’s attackers
First, let’s call out the groups that are attacking Judge
Alito from behind their “independentcourt.org” moniker. Who do
we find when we lift the veil? The ACLU, People for the
American Way, NOW, NARAL, AFL-CIO, Human Rights Campaign,
MoveOn.org, Americans United, NAACP, NARAL (see link at end
for the full list). And what theme unites these groups? An
agenda to purge any and all references to religion from our
public lives.
Unable to advance their agenda through the legislature, these
groups have turned to federal judges to mandate this secular
purging of our society. And their strategy has worked.
That is why in Boston this year, Christmas trees are called
“Holiday Trees.” In front of Target stores, you will not find
Salvation Army bellringers. Most damaging of all, our
schoolchildren are told they cannot post Thanksgiving or
Christmas pictures in their elementary school that mention God
or Jesus.
+ + Samuel Alito is a threat to the radical secularists
Why do these groups see Sam Alito as such a threat? Because
Alito doesn’t find such a secular mandate in the penumbras of
the Constitution. In fact, he thinks there is nothing wrong
with a kindergarten student thanking “Jesus” in a Thanksgiving
poster at school! Just such a case made it to Judge Alito’s
desk and he objected to the school removing this child’s
poster from a Thanksgiving display.
In another case, Judge Alito found that a community’s holiday
display could, in fact, include traditional religious symbols
alongside secular holiday symbols -- a position the ACLU
strenuously opposed. In summary, Judge Alito has upheld
religious liberties while rejecting the radical mandate from
the Left to purge the public square of every religious
reference.
+ + Grassfire’s grassroots strategy
I close with our three-part plan that Grassfire will be
unfolding over the next few weeks:
#1 -- Activate the million-strong e-network
Activate our million-strong e-team with information on the
truth of Judge Alito’s religious liberties record and the
agenda of the Left. Total emails in December est. at 2.3
million. As part of this strategy we want to add 100,000
additional signers to our petition supporting the Alito
nomination and present to the Judiciary Committee immediately
after Christmas recess.
#2 -- Send in ground troops
Coordinate with groups like Federalist Society to encourage
citizens to speak out in town hall meetings with their
Senators and at other special events.
Across the nation, we expect Grassfire team members to flood
Senate offices with letters, faxes and phone calls. Before
Christmas, we are calling for 7,000-10,000 letters.
Immediately after Christmas, a flood of 10,000+ faxes to
Senate offices. Finally, phone calls once the hearings start.
#3 -- Targeted efforts to “Blues In Red”
Grassfire is also initiating a targeted email effort in Red
states with Blue senators, encouraging these Senators to
support the Alito nomination. We are focusing here because
“Blues in Red” are clearly the most important Senators in this
debate. To my knowledge, this is the largest targeted e-effort
of its kind to this group and will reach a minimum of 50,000
citizens in each key state.
+ + Your Action
I am asking each of our team members to take two actions
today:
First, if you have not yet signed the petition supporting
Judge Alito, please do so today by
clicking here:
http://Grassfire.org/64/Petition.asp
Second, will you make it your personal goal to rally at least
5 of your friends to sign as well? Simply sign and then
forward your “Link” message to your friends. Our system will
track your impact and report back to you.
Because of you, this winning strategy has worked effectively
for Grassfire on a host of key issues, namely the marriage
amendment battle and our efforts to counter the likes of Cindy
Sheehan and the anti-war advocates. With your help, we will
again employ the tools of the Internet to turn back Judge
Alito’s attackers.
Thank you so much for making Grassfire.org one of the largest
and most active networks of grassroots conservatives in the
nation.
