Citizen Petition To End Earmarks!

The Alert:
It is no secret that The Congressional Earmarking system is corrupt. The system, allows Congressmen to direct billions of our tax dollars to pet projects and preferred supporters, companies or organizations -- all without public debate or even a vote in Congress. A failed effort to impose a one year moratorium on earmarks did little to temper Congressional earmarks for 2008.

Update: Congress just passed a bill containing more than 500 earmarks. Among those are the Parking Garage to Nowhere, a visitor's center that you can't visit, a federal grant to restore a mounted fish, and $10,000 in federal money to support a fashion and portrait show. Is it any wonder why Congress has a single-digit approval rating? This is the kind of reckless, arrogant, out-of-control spending that we oppose. Help Grassfire rally an additional 50,000 citizen petitions this month in time for our next presentation to key leaders in Congress demanding an end to earmark spending.

The Action:
Grassfire.org is urging ALL members of our team, and concerned citizens to take immediate action in two important ways:

  1. Sign our national petition opposing Congressional Earmarking. Grassfire supports a one-year moratorium with the goal of a permanent ban on Earmarks and their corrupting influence. Once our goal of 200,000 petitions is reached, Grassfire will make an EMERGENCY petition delivery to the Senate Majority Leader.

 2. Call your two Senators today demanding they vote no on cloture of the Reid omnibus bill (S. 3297) unless it is fully amendable and debatable. To quickly reach your Senators, call the Capitol Switchboard at 202/224-3121.

The Petition States:

The “End Earmarking” petition states:

As a citizen of the United States, I am signing this petition expressing my opposition to Congressional Earmarks. Earmarks are a corrupting influence that allows members of Congress to fund pet projects and favored organizations while bypassing public scrutiny or competitive, merit-based allocation. My tax dollars should not be used for Earmarks.

I am calling for:
A -- Congress to pass and the President to sign an IMMEDIATE ONE-YEAR MORATORIUM on Earmarks.
B -- Congress to pass a permanent legislative or constitutional solution that bans Earmarks.
C -- Presidential and Congressional candidates to pledge to support the one-year moratorium as well as a permanent ban on Earmarks.

At the very least, Earmarks should be required to be part of the text of legislation (and not the report language) and thus be subject to public scrutiny and public votes by members of Congress. It is time for Congress to stop using my tax dollars to fund their pet projects and personal friends. This corruption must end.
