RELEASE:
EMBARGOED UNTIL MARCH 1
WASHINGTON DC, March 1, 2005 –– On the eve of Supreme Court oral arguments to decide the constitutionality of the Ten Commandments, a new national poll has found that 81% of Americans support the display of the Ten Commandments on public property.
“This survey shows overwhelming support nationwide for displaying the Ten Commandments on public property,” says Steve Elliott, President of Grassfire.org which commissioned the poll. “The results are especially impressive in that we asked the question from the negative; respondents had to answer ‘no’ to indicate support for the constitutionality of the Ten Commandments.”
The survey was conducted February 20-21 as part of the periodic national Grassfire Tracking Poll. The survey question stated, “Do you believe the display of the Ten Commandments on public property violates the U.S. Constitution?” 80.9 percent of those responding said displaying the Ten Commandments does not violate the Constitution.
“If the Supreme Court rules that displaying the Ten Commandments is unconstitutional, it will be going against hundreds of years of American history as well as the vast majority of the American people,” says Elliott, who is releasing the results of this new poll at a National Press Club briefing today, in addition to delivering to the Supreme Court over 50,000 petitions supporting the public display of the Ten Commandments and taking part in a citizen-led vigil on the steps of the Court.
This national Grassfire Tracking Poll telephone survey of 2,522 citizens was conducted February 20-21 and commissioned by Grassfire.org. Margin of sampling error is +/- 2.5 percentage points with a 99% level of confidence. For complete results of the February 20-21 Grassfire Tracking Poll, visit Grassfire.org.
